In common usage, mood refers to the emotional state of a person, it refers to the emotional quotient of an individual, with reference to a particular incident, time, experience and so on. Mood disorders are generally associated with terms such as “good mood” describing that the person is happy or “bad mood” describing that the person is in a state of depression r anger.
Mood is a tem which is very common in day to day life. More accurately, it is the visible characteristics exhibited by a person in a particular mood. (NCBI, 2006). In everyday usage, it determines an individual’s current state of mind. (Fierman, 2005).
In clinical terms also, the definition of mood is not much different. It is the observable characteristics of a person, undertaken due to a particular emotional frame of mind. Mood, being good or bad is not considered abnormal or irrational in generally since every person is believed to undergo bad and good moods in everyday life due to various circumstances. It is only when this mood swings or mood fluctuations is not un sync with other emotions felt by an individual and these mood swings disturb or disrupt the normal workings of an individual in terms of physical activity and mental faculties and social relationships when it an ailment and thus proper medical treatment becomes a necessity ( Bland, 1997).
