Description
Sociology is a subject that tries to define and identify attributes, behaviors, activities or human groups of societies. These social agents that form society are influenced in their demeanors, beliefs, habits by the gender, ethnicity, social class and even nationality. Most of the unconscious beliefs and responses to social situations can be traced back to childhood or early growth stages. This is the stage of human being when the agent involuntarily imbibes certain habits, characters, beliefs and response mechanism depending on the social class of upbringing, gender, economy, etc. Most of the adult responses to social situations can be traced back to formation years of the person. Bourdieu’s work even suggests that taste and choices of a social agent directly represent social class. For example, a lower class person chooses less healthy greater quantity fatty food to eat and an elite socio economic class person less fatty healthy food (Fenton, 2009). This essay contains two parts the first part discusses the Bourdieu’s theories as applied to the social characteristics of this writer such as gender, ethnicity and class. The first part also discusses other society constructs such as power; knowledge; discourse, subjectivity, identity and agency. The second part is the self reflection of the background to this essay i.e. of having migrated to Australia from China and becoming a citizen of Australia. Self reflection dwells on the transformation of being major ethnic national to minor ethnic national and in merging with another nationality altogether.
