Description
Bank Muscat was reconstituted in 1993 as a public joint stock company by the voluntary merger of two established banks – Bank of Muscat and Al Bank Al Ahli Al Omani. Bank Muscat is publicly held institution listed on the Muscat Security Market. Bank Muscat is now the largest bank in Oman.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the financial performance of the Bank Muscat during the period from 2008-2010 and compare its performance with other two banks. The purpose of the study is to classify the commercial banks in Oman on the basis of their financial characteristics revealed by the financial ratios. A total of three Omani commercial banks were financially analyzed.
The Bank have achieved a net profit of RO 102 million for the year ended 31 December 2010 as against a net profit of RO 74 million reported in 2009, an increase 37.8%. Bank Muscat has 41% market share in the total assets of the all banks. Bank Muscat is only Omani bank to have the largest shareholding by Royal Court Affaris, Omani Government.
Bank Muscat has the largest market share in Oman banking sector. Bank Muscat profits have grown steadily. Operational efficiency of the bank is also better than the other banks in Oman. The bank is planning to focus on GCC operations and improve profitability.
The bank is able to manage its nonperforming loans. Nonperforming loans of the banks have been reduced to RO 176 mn in 2010 from RO 202 mn in the year 2009.
Oman banking sector has become more competitive. New foreign banks are coming in Oman. Bank Muscat has to introduce effective marketing strategies to maintain its market share.
