Description

It is also called as, same sex marriage; gay marriage is the practice of marriage between two males or two females. It allows them to have the exact same set of legal rights as those possessed by heterosexual spouses. These include rights such as hospital visitation. A step beyond civil union, gay marriage will at last give LGBT partners the security that every family, whether m/f, m/m, or f/f, deserves (Bayer, 2001).
According to Wade and Pevalin (2004) few courts do not allow same sex marriage but is considered as unconstitutional. It is considered discriminating as to not allowing certain groups of their rights. According to laws, there is no reason as to why their marriage should not take place. There surely are limitations involved. Such marriages should not involve children. There is no natural way that two people of the same-sex could possibly have children of their own and should not be given custody of a child or the ability to adopt a child (Bayer, 2001).
Gay rights advocates are intensifying efforts to gain legal rights same sex unions but it is drawing resistance from social conservatives. Supporters of same sex marriage say that gay and lesbian couples need and deserves the same symbolic and practical benefits for their relationships as enjoyed by heterosexuals. Whereas the opponents are of the view that recognizing it sex unions will hurt traditional families at a time when marriage is already suffering from divorce and other social trends. They also disagree on the fact that the raising children should be allowed in gay households (Bayer, 2001).
Being married is a source of stability and commitment. The values that gay couples exhibit in their daily lives are often indistinguishable from those of their straight neighbors. They’re loyal to their mates; they are monogamous and also devoted to their partners. They value and participate in family life, are committed to making neighborhoods and communities safer and better places to live, honor and abide by the law (Williams, 2003). Many make valuable contributions to their communities, serving on school boards, volunteering in community charities and trying to be good citizens. In doing so, they also take full advantage of their relationship to make not only their lives better but also for their partners.(Buell, 2001)
