Description

The primary purpose of public libraries is to act as an agency for education, civic centre for inspiration and uplift for people and political enlightenment (Patrick Williams, 1988). With the advent of personal computers and broad band internet connections, the traditional hard copy libraries have made way for cyber libraries. The access to information is unlimited in the cyber world. It is limited only to the curiosity of the user. Pornographic material is freely available on the net making it a temptation to watch even to the serious seeker of information. Having said this, pornographic material is viewed mostly for pleasure and not for information. Libraries are viewed as centres to seek knowledge and information to uplift the self, the nation and the mankind. Viewing of porn in public libraries serves none of the purposes of library. A Royal Oak man was arrested for viewing child pornography on a public computer (The Daily Tribune, 2008). So the question arises. Should pornographic material be filtered out for access to the users?
