Description
This assignment is based on the following scenario –
Scenario
You have been appointed as the Site Manager for an emerging construction firm. Effective communication is part of the changes you want to introduce to the organisation but senior management needs to be convinced. Also, you are thinking of suggesting modifications to the organisational structure.
Task
1. Keep a record from your working environment for an appropriate period (minimum 1 day - maximum 1 week). Use this record to produce the following:
a) Identify situations where each of the forms of communication has been utilised (written/visual/oral)
b) Identify where information and communication technology has been used.
c) Identify areas where barriers to communication (physical, psychological/ intellectual) have occurred due to the medium of communication used.

a) Review and evaluate the emergent use of integrated software on construction projects
b) Using the examples you have identified in 2(c) explain how ICT could have helped remove the barrier, or why you do not feel that ICT could have helped.
3. Critically evaluate the role that management theory has to play in informing the practice of management in today’s construction industry.
4. Consider your company’s organisation chart, and suggest any changes to the structure which you would recommend. Fully explain the reasons for your choice of action, or inaction. Make specific reference to the effects of the following:
a) Span of Control
b) Centralised v Decentralised
5. To what extent do you feel that management of your organisation/ company fulfils the principles and processes of management i.e.
